Two most common conditions that can affect heart are mitral valve prolapse and coronary artery disease. If a person has these conditions, and medicine, lifestyle changes or other treatments do not ease the symptoms, it may suggest for surgery.
The method of heart surgery may include: open surgery through a large chest incision (sternotomy) or minimally invasive surgery through a few small incisions between your ribs (also called thoracoscopic surgery). Surgeons use long instruments, including a thoracoscope (long thin tube) which has a light and tiny camera at the end. Images from the camera are sent to a video monitor to guide doctors as they operate.
